Shiny, dark, garnet red color. Primary aromas of black fruit such as black cherries and blackberries. More spicy aromas such as oregano and thyme and deeper aromas of black olives give the wine complexity and body. The small proportion of Syrah provides structure and complements the smooth, fruity character of the Grenache. The wood is beautifully interwoven and never dominating. This pure and balanced character makes it easy to enjoy young without losing its storage capacity.
Rich dishes such as hare with truffle and grape stuffed guinea fowl, wild boar stew or marinated beef cheeks find a nice hearty but balanced companion in it.
- climate
-
Châteauneuf has the driest climate in the entire Rhône valley. Warm, dry summers where the famous layer of boulders that were formerly deposited here by the Rhône store the heat during the day and release it at night. The mistral cools the vineyards.
- soil
-
A variation of soils where the majority of the Grenache is on sandy soils and part on the typical clay soil with boulders. The Syrah also flourishes best on these latter soils. Terraced vineyards on east-facing slopes.
- vinification
-
Grenache 90% and Syrah 10%. Small yield and strict selection. Classic fermentation in a mix of large wooden barrels and cement vats. Long maceration accompanied by regular and careful pigeage. Minimal filtering. The wine matures for another 12 months on a mix of already used French oak.
